Cookery Competitions
In St. Colman’s CC we take great pride in entering National Cooking competitions such as Fine Dine at mine, Home COOK Hero, Apprentice Chef and this year, Macroom Food Festival. We have some worthy winners in recent years with these competitions. In 2016, a second year student was awarded an All Ireland Title for ‘The Best Burger’. His culinary skills were highly commended by Nick Napi from Masterchef. In 2017, a sixth year student was a worthy winner in the very famous Apprentice Chef competition in Tralee IT with her very creative dish comprising of a trio of desserts. In recent years, we have had the pleasure of welcoming an array of celebrity chefs to the school who gave excellent demonstrations to our students, Mark Doe from ‘Just Cooking, Cookery School’, Arun Kapil from Green Saffron, Rachel Allen from the renowned Ballymaloe Cookery School. TY Home Economics trips have included visits to the National Ploughing Championships where students had the opportunity to engage in a food trail observing demonstrations from Paul Flynn, Kevin Dundon and Neven Maguire and sample some of the produce from the wonderful Artisan Irish producers. Other trips included trips to Butler’s Chocolate Dublin, Douglas Cookery Cottage, Farmers Market Mahon and Pizza San Marco enabling students to get a flavour for the different food industries. This year, we have started a creative cookery class after school where Home Economics and non Home Economics students can avail of an opportunity to learn the basic cooking skills that are essential life skills in a relaxed environment.
