o Consider the benefits of solar thermal systems

o Evaluate the potential power available in the wind 
o Consider the importance of site selection 
o Investigate the planning exemptions for domestic wind turbines 
o Hydro 
o Understand how micro hydro generates electricity 
o Analyse the different micro hydro systems 
o Consider the potential effect of micro hydro on the environment 
o Biomass 
o Analyse the different types of materials that can be used for biomass energy 
o Understand the functions of biomass boilers and their efficiencies
 o Understand the functions of wood pellet stoves 
o Geothermal 
o Understand how geothermal systems work 
o Differentiate between a ground source heat pump air source heat pump systems 
Utilise a range of calculations to assess the efficiency and output of a range of renewable energy systems including: • Considering the annual energy requirements of a dwelling both thermal and electrical • Assessing the energy output of a renewable energy system in relation to the overall energy requirements 

Section 2 : 
Legislation, Health and Safety and Impact of renewable energy systems 
Analysing current legislation including the key legal responsibilities in relation to the use of renewable energy systems making reference to for example: • Building Regulations Part L 2011 • Energy Performance Building Directive 2006 

investigating the impact of renewable energy systems on a • Political level • Environmental level • Economic level • Social level 
Assessing the impact of renewable energy systems on the construction industry
Generate health and safety initiatives aimed at reducing the risks associated with renewable energy systems for example:   Complete a risk assessment • P.P.E audit • Evaluation of manual handling aids 

Section 3 : Low Energy Dwellings 
Utilize the appropriate techniques and design consideration aimed at increasing the energy efficiency of a dwelling including the use of: 
• solar 
• wind 
• biomass 
• geothermal systems 

Analysing the key principles and characteristics of passive house construction including: • Orientation of house • Glazing • Thermal Mass • Insulation • Air tightness • Mechanical Ventilation 

Contrast the benefits of renewable energy with that of traditional energy production in relation to economics and environmental factors which including: • Estimate installation, operational costs and payback periods of renewable energy 
Considering the carbon dioxide of the emissions of traditional energy production versus renewable energy production
